Pinarello believed that if they were going to build a mountain bike, it had to be an all-in affair. The Pinarello Dogma XC 9.9 is no gentle toe in the water, no copycat ride, it's as much of a design departure from the crowd, as much as a Pinarello, as their Dogma road frames are. And this is a great thing for the mountain bike world.

Yes, they applied their SOE, Simulation Optimization Evolution, thinking. Yes, they fully employed asymmetric tube shaping. Yes they transferred all their carbon-fiber know-how. Not surprising their analysis revealed that forces on a cross-country hard tail 29er are different than the forces on a road bike. And the shapes reveal how different.

The main triangle may look fairly traditional. But that image is deceptive. Pinarello actually runs the down tube lower relative to the head tube than most off-road bikes. The reason is performance. The better alignment of the tube means it better resists torsional forces. This they call Pinafit. Many companies like the down tube higher to avoid having a suspension fork crown smashing the down tube. Pinarello gets around this with their Forkstopper. These are basically integrated bumpers that the crown can hit rather than the frame.

The rear triangle are where differences are obvious. The curves help optimize the triangle both for compliance and propulsion. The left chain stay has Pinarello's RAD brake mounts, which are placed entirely on the lower stay, rather than on the seat stay. This allows the seat stay to be thinner for better flexibility and gives them another reason to stiffen up the chain stay, which improves braking power as well as energy efficiency. The seat stays look somewhat twisted where they join the frame, but here, too, the design is about optimizing shock absorption. Having the stays split allows each to help with dissipation equally, and by having them meet with the frame above the top tube means that the vibrations stop with the stays rather than getting transmitted to the rest of the bike. A key part of the stay design is the new four-bolt seatpost clamp. They call it X-Power, and by spreading out the clamping area, reducing the stress on the frame and seatpost.

If you're used to poring over component specifications, you probably noticed that the front derailleur pinch bolt arm on Shimano and SRAM derailleurs are placed in different spots relative to the derailleur clamp. This can present a design challenge for routing front derailleur cables. Pinarello solved the problem by having two different exit ports for the front derailleur cable, one for each mounting point.

Not only are they interested in the revolutionary, but also in employing smart ideas. That's why there's internal cable routing—not only does it look clean, but it keeps the cables from betting gunked up. And the bottom bracket is the PressFit30 standard. You can use a standard crank with adapter cups, but you also have access to the stiffest oversize cranks on the market. In both cases, not needing threaded cups makes the bike lighter and the oversized bottom bracket juncture contributes to the overall stiffness of the bike.

Stiffness and light weight are also dependent on the mix of carbon-fiber plies used to construct the frame tubes. Pinarello uses Torayca's 60HM1K carbon-fiber to build the frame light and stiff. And they deploy Torayca's nanoalloy technology to protect the frame from shattering on hard impacts.

For all the technology, the real magic is in the ride. Pinarello wants the XC 9.9 to be a Pinarello, so it feels road bike stiff and responsive when pounding the pedals, but has a geometry that allows the bike to feel confident on both grinding ascents and white-knuckle descents. The longish top tube and relaxed head angle, when combined with the direct down tube make all this possible.

The bike comes with a Fox Float 29er FIT CTD fork with 90mm of travel. The Climb Trail Descend platform is actuated from a handlebar-mounted remote. Both the fork and the RAD mounts are designed to work with 160mm rotors. The seat tube diameter is 31.6mm.

The Pinarello Dogma XC 9.9 29er frameset changes assumptions about what a hard tail 29er should be.
